What Happened to JessiCakes Project?!

Over four years have passed since my last blog entry. I am so sorry I have neglected to blog here. You see, 2016, was a very tumultuous time. I did graduate from my undergrad at UC Davis, majoring in Neurobiology Physiology and Behaviour (NPB). Still, I realized that I had to do more work to achieve my dreams of becoming a doctor. You might be wondering what I am talking about. What does becoming a doctor has to do with baking? Well, let me backtrack almost nine years before I cause so much confusion!

Back in late 2010, on a Winter break as a high school senior, I've decided to bake to raise funds for the charities that I supported. Then, a month later, my mom and I started JessiCakes Project. You can read more details on the About page.

Donating portions of our earnings to charities was not the only way that I used my baking talents to help people. I also became a Sugar Angel for Icing Smiles, Inc. Through Icing Smiles, I was able to cheer up kids who are battling serious illnesses and their families. It was during those times that I have started to entertain the possibility of becoming a doctor. If cakes can cheer them up, medicine can help cure them. My wish of becoming a doctor intensified in each cake that I made and hand-delivered. So, I decided to pursue a pre-med course in college.

Fast-forward to four years later...I had finally graduated as a pre-med, but I was not entirely done yet. I had to stay almost two years more for additional studies. That took up a lot of my energy-- both physical and mental. JessiCakes Project had to take a backseat as I traversed the obstacle-filled path that I had chosen to take.

I was finally done with an undergrad in 2018. I left the university as a super senior. Then, Summer 2019, I started my MS in Medical Physiology at Case to better equip me for the grueling medical school life. I am hopeful that this coming Spring 2020, I will be enrolling in the College of Medicine. During undergrad and post-grad, I have been doing volunteer work, which is why I have not been back into baking full-time.

A Princess Cake

I can barely make a dozen cakes between 2017-2019 due to my grueling schedule.
I may be on a long hiatus from professional baking but you cannot take the baking away from me! Baking cakes is something that cheers me up, so even if I did not take any orders, I try to whip something up for myself and my family. Cakes have their way of bringing smiles and can be uplifting. And they always remind me why I am here, trying to make it to my end goal of becoming a doctor because that is where it all started. I can say that my dream of becoming a doctor began with a cake and when I see one whether made by me or something I bought from a bakery, it will always remind me why I am here today!

You are not alone in this world that is full of challenges. Remember that you are worth it. Don't lose hope. Never give up! Continue the fight and reach for the stars! God bless you. xoxo ~ Jessica
